Individual & Family Health Insurance

Whether you're covering just yourself or your whole household, I'll help you compare plans, explain what each one covers, and make sure the doctors and prescriptions you rely on are accounted for.

Who this page is for

  • Individuals without employer coverage
  • Families covering a spouse and children
  • Households whose current plan is too expensive or limited
  • Anyone switching plans after a life change such as a move, marriage or new baby

Covering the whole household

Family plans cover you, a spouse and your children under one plan. I compare the combined costs, including the family deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, not only the premium.

Kids and young adults

On ACA-compliant plans, children can generally stay on a parent's plan until age 26. Pediatric care is an essential health benefit on ACA-compliant plans. Some non-ACA products may not include it.

Maternity and prescriptions

Maternity care and prescription drugs are essential health benefits on ACA-compliant plans, but some non-ACA plans limit or exclude them. If you're planning for either, tell me up front.

Other programs you may qualify for

Some households qualify for Medicaid or CHIP, or for Marketplace premium tax credits. If one of those is a better fit than a private plan, I'll tell you.

Eligibility

You generally need to live in a state where I'm licensed and where the plan is offered, and meet the plan's age and residency rules. ACA Marketplace plans also require open enrollment or a special enrollment period, such as after losing coverage. Some private plans ask health questions before approving you. I explain which rules apply before you apply.

Provider networks

Every plan has a network of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies. Going out of network can cost more, or may not be covered at all. Before you enroll, I check your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions against each plan, and I tell you plainly if I can't confirm one.

ACA-compliant plans vs. other private plans

A general comparison. Specific plan terms vary, so I go through each plan's official documents with you.

Frequently asked questions

Can everyone in my family be on one plan?+

Usually yes. Family plans cover a spouse and dependent children. Some families split coverage across plans if that works out better, and I can compare both.

Are my family's doctors covered?+

It depends on the plan's network. I check your providers and prescriptions against each plan I show you.

When can I change my family's plan?+

ACA Marketplace plans generally require open enrollment or a qualifying life event, such as a move, marriage, birth or loss of coverage. Some private plans have different rules.

What does a consultation cost?+

The consultation is free and there's no obligation to enroll.
